What if you could make the world better? What if someone gave you the chance to do that? Would you do it? Would you leave everything behind? Start a journey that would change people's lives and also yours? Would you? And what if I told you it's possible!?

Imagine a world where you could reverse the effects of pollution, global warming, deforestation, over fishing, hunger, poverty.

We are willing to drive more than 60 thousand km (approximately 38 thousand miles) for more than 800 hours across 20 countries to make a difference.

Helping people and protecting the environment.  From the east coast of the U.S. to north of Alaska, to Argentina and to north of South America. And we are here today to ask for you support. Visit our website for more info at TheDarienProject.com

What do you feel the biggest benefits of Crowdfunding are?

Sep 25, 7:28PM EDT1

Hello Amy!

Well, I think that it is a marketplace that is growing exponentially every year and attract new customers at a fraction of the cost, that's one benefit. Another would be that you have a good feedback before lauching. You can also generate revenue with less risk and fourth there is still an opportunity to upsell anything you want to your backers.

Sep 26, 12:32AM EDT0

How different do you feel your concept is compared to anything else out there right now?

Sep 25, 4:25PM EDT1

Hello David!

I don't think is very different compared to anything else out there. The main idea is to spread environmental awareness and mostly help people, and there are a lot volunteers, programs, institutions, foundations, companies and people trying to make the world a better place. But, I think The Darien Project has a certain uniqueness, a different ring to it. It's rare to see people giving up their comfort zone to do something like that. Usually they leave for a month or two and then they're back into their warm beds. The Darien Project is about people helping people and being out there, experiencing what these people experience. Looking them in the eyes and giving them hope for a better future. Helpign them understand their own environment and empower them with knowledge. It's better to teach someone how to fish than to give them the fish.

Sep 26, 12:30AM EDT0

What will be the next project after that?

Sep 25, 2:21PM EDT1

Hello Jasmine!

I certainly, after completing the project, I would like very much to go back to these places that we helped to see how well they were doing. But if I had to choose now the next step for The Darien Project, it would be something like doing it all over again but visiting different places, or follow the same idea but in a different continent like Africa.

What part of the population do you think are the best candidates for funding a crowdfunding campaign?

Sep 25, 12:21PM EDT1

Hello Amanda!

Well, in my opinion there ins't a part of the population that is the best candidates for funding a campaign. I believe that any and all parts are good. It depends on what you are trying to achieve with your campaign.

Sep 26, 12:06AM EDT0

What important lesson have you learnt from using crowdfunding so far?

Sep 25, 11:52AM EDT1

Hello Sharon!

I have learnt that first, you need to be prepared. Have a good network of friends that can help you push this forward. If not you will need some money to pay for advertisement, like the ones Facebook offers. And lastly, if you fail once, don't let yourself down, don't let go and keep trying.

Sep 26, 12:01AM EDT0

Interesting project! Your website looks great. Do you know how to build cob houses?

Sep 25, 8:00AM EDT1

Hello Michael!

Thank you! The project still on its early stages, there's still a lot to be done, but I think it's doing okay so far. And to answer your question, yes I do and it's very simple but it takes a lot of work.

Sep 25, 11:55PM EDT0

What advice would you give to anyone else looking to create their first crowdfunding project?

Sep 25, 7:05AM EDT1

Hello Courtney!

First: be ready, gather everything you possibly can about your project. Second: set some money asside to invest in marketing and advertisement like the ones in Facebook. And lastly, never give up!

Sep 25, 11:53PM EDT0

Can you give me 4 reasons as to why you choose crowdfunding to launch your product?

Sep 25, 2:07AM EDT1

Hello Cynthia!

Well, I think that it is a marketplace that is growing exponentially every year and attract new customers at a fraction of the cost, that one reason. Another would be that you have a good feedback before lauching. Third reason would be that you can generate revenue with less risk and fourth there is still an opportunity to upsell anything you want to your backers.

Sep 25, 11:52PM EDT0

How much time are you planning to spend building the cob houses?

Sep 25, 1:18AM EDT1

Hello Rsingh!

How musch time it takes to build a cob house depends on how skilled you are, how hard you work, how many people help, how big and elaborate your house is and, to some little extent, how much money you have. In warm breezy weather you can build 2 or 2 ½ feet of height on your wall each day. That may not sound like much, but if you build your walls 8ft high then you could theoretically have them done in four days.

Sep 25, 11:47PM EDT0

Does it cost anything to start a crowdfunding campaign?

Sep 25, 12:57AM EDT1

Hello Erin.

No, I don't think it does. But if you achieve your goal, the website that you are using to fund your project will keep a percentage for themselves.

Sep 25, 11:44PM EDT0

Have you done something similar before but locally?

Sep 25, 12:36AM EDT1

Hello Jenna!

Yes I have. A few years ago I made part of a movement of people to replant native trees in an area that had been devastated by a timber company. I helped to protest against the construction of a residencial building in a protected area. Events like picking up trash in beaches, recycling and more.

Sep 25, 11:43PM EDT0

Can you give some advice to people interested in launching their own crowdfunding campaigns?

Sep 25, 12:14AM EDT1

Hello Paul!

Of course I can, gladly. First, be ready, gather everything you possibly can about your project. Second, set some money asside to invest in marketing and advertisement like the ones in Facebook. And lastly, never give up.

Sep 25, 11:33PM EDT0

How long do you think it would take for this crowdfunding campaign to attain the goals you have?

Sep 24, 11:51PM EDT1

Hello Mark.

Our goals are to travel 20 countries, visit a little over 100 schools and poor communities. There are 55 thousand km (34 thousand miles) of roads to be driven, it's a total of perhaps more than 800 hours (32 days) of just driving. I assume it can be done in 365 days.

Sep 25, 11:30PM EDT0

Do you have someone in your team that will do the marketing and PR to help you make this campaign a success?

Sep 24, 11:01PM EDT1

Hello Jason!

Honestly we do not, but that's a good idea. In the mean time I'm the one taking care of that. I have never crowdfunded before, it's been a very interesting test drive. I'm learning a lot and discovering new things as I go. I know I won't be able to reach my goal this time, but I'm glad I did it because I gaining experience.

Sep 25, 11:23PM EDT0

Is crowdfunding just about money or are there other benefits?

Sep 24, 10:21PM EDT1

Hello Nathan.

I think crowdfunding isn't just about the money, it's also a good way to get the name of your company, product or idea out to the public.

Sep 25, 11:15PM EDT0

Have you approached shops or retail outlets to donate money or to donate products that could help you as incentives?

Sep 24, 10:13PM EDT1

Hello Kimberly!

Actually not yet. I feel that I need to layout the entire project before I can approach companies and shops asking for donations. But that's definitely on our to do list. Would have any ideas?

Sep 25, 11:10PM EDT0

How much research did you do in regard to crowdfunding before you settled on this particular site?

Sep 24, 9:55PM EDT1

Hello Susan!

To be honest, I didn't do any research about crowdfunding and how it worked. I just knew there were sites like Kickstarter.com and I thought I would give it a try. I learned quite a few things and if this crowdfunding fails, I'll be ready for the next one.

I found out about this particular site through Jesa from Amafeed. She saw my crowdfunding project and sent me a message and I thought it would be a good thing. It's actually helping me to look at things in a different perspective. Some of the questions are great and they're giving me new ideas.

Sep 25, 10:58PM EDT0

Who is going to join you on this trip and can other people join?

Sep 24, 8:06PM EDT1

Hello Holly, thank you for asking.

Well, it's a team of four. But who knows, perhaps we will get a good sponsorship and we can include more people. There are three spots + myself. The idea is to have professionals that can aggregate a valuable set of skills necessary to complete the project and gather information about the environment, and that includes wildlife, people, nature, ideas, everything bad and everything good. There will be a lot of reaching out to do. We want to talk to people about the environment, sustainability and give them free workshops, specially where they are needed the most.

I already have two people in mind and they have been invited, one is an oceanographer and a environmental engineer, so there's one spot still available. But keep in mind, everyone we meet, will in some degree, be a part of our team too.

We're preparing for the future as well. When we're are done travelling, we want to keep in touch with everyone we helped by leaving behind representatives of The Darien Project, so we can grow stronger and take bigger steps towards a better future.

How long does it take to build a cob house and what materials do you need for building one?

Sep 24, 6:34PM EDT1

Hello Lisa! Thanks for asking!

How fast you finish your house depends on how skilled you are, how hard you work, how many people help, how big and elaborate your house is and, to some small extent, how much money you have. In warm breezy weather you can build 2 or 2 ½ feet of height on your wall each day. That may not sound like much, but if you build your walls 8ft high then you could theoretically have them done in four days. And the materials you would need would be lumps of earth mixed with sand, straw, and water. But they can vary with creativity.

:)
