Scars is a show that deals with depression, suicide, self acceptance and identity. Ask the creator and cast anything (AMA)

Nov 11, 2017

Scars is a show about identity, acceptance and interpersonal relationships. We're in the process of building our audience and making a pilot of the show (and raising funds to do so).

This show has LGBTQ characters and deals with a lot of mental health issues. Bring your questions, whether it's about the show, our experiences in general or something related to mental health. We'll also be doing a livestream while we answer your questions, so feel free to come hang out with us on there as well.

The AMA Livestream will be taking place here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d69bgQtSYg

How can you tell if a person is suffering from depression??

Nov 12, 10:06AM EST0

where are you from?

Nov 11, 7:29PM EST0

We're all based in Toronto, Ontario Canada. A few of us are born and raised here.

I myself am from a small town in Northern Ontario (in Canada). I've lived in a few places around the country, most recently being three years in Vancouver B.C.

Why do you think people are homophobic?

Nov 10, 2:55AM EST0

Religion and mis-educated. People fear what they don't understand and what they are raised to fear. Fear breeds hate.

Nov 11, 5:34PM EST0

Can you tell if someone is gay or lesbian just by how they look?

Nov 9, 9:51PM EST0

I have a friend who came out as gay. I had no idea and his mannerisms and the way he looked would never have even hinted at that.

Going back to the previous question, no.. You really can't tell. People's styles are seperate from their sexual identity.

Nov 11, 5:30PM EST0

Do gay men act like girls? Do lesbians act like boys?

Nov 9, 10:32AM EST0

I don't want to offend or anything but there are preconcieved mannerisms or characteristics that are sometimes present.

No and no. Yes there are common mannerisms but you can't go by just that. I wouldn't classify them as "acting like girls" and "acting like boys". It's a bit of an archaic view point to classify guys and girls by specific behaviour.

Nov 11, 5:25PM EST0

How would you feel if this crowdfunding campaign doesn't meet your expectations?

Nov 9, 9:22AM EST0

One way or another we'll find a way to at least do this pilot. I don't think it's a binary thing as far as making this goes. It would help the progression but regardless of how it does, we'll make the pilot.

My expectations are on the lower side based on my previous experience, but at this point it has succeeded my expectations, so it's a non-issue at this point.

Nov 11, 5:18PM EST0

Did coming out effect your relationships ( parents, siblings, friends) in a negative way?

Nov 9, 5:48AM EST0

Yes, but minimal. Things affected me how I thought they would. I made a point to distance myself from anyone who wouldn't be accepting. Nothing caught me off guard except for my almost fiance leaving me. That was the hardest to deal with.

Nov 11, 5:11PM EST0

How do you feel when people are insistent that this is a choice that people make?

Nov 9, 5:22AM EST0

With so much information out there, it makes no sense why people don't look things up. Going back to earlier, when I was little, I had the hots for this lady in daycare, and I just knew I liked girls. So I emphasize with just knowing and it not being a choice. The people who don't educate themselves about this are making the choice to be in the dark and believing this. There's no point in getting angry and frusterated at people who chose to not educate themselves.

Frusterated. Science has proven time and time again that it's genetics and the way the brain is wired. With so much information out there, it makes no sense why some people don't educate themselves with actual science.

Why do gay and lesbian people have rainbow flags or rainbow stickers? What does it mean?

Nov 9, 1:07AM EST0

The flag was initially the flag of the human race. As there was a lot of discrimination and fighting (for instance, the Stonewall Riots) it was used to symbolize world peace and eventually became connected with the LGBT community. The colors represent all of the different races united as one.

Nov 11, 5:01PM EST0

How can a family have two moms? Which one is thereal mom?

Nov 8, 2:47PM EST0

If you are a child with two moms, you may have to ask which one is the biological one.

They're both the "real" moms. If you're looking at biological, then it's the biological one. But for an actual "mother", they are both mothers.

Nov 11, 4:57PM EST0

What if my religion says it is wrong to be gay?

Nov 8, 12:16PM EST0

Time to find a new religion. You'll have to make a choice, is your religion really worth denying that? Old religions are having a hard time adopting to this.

Homosexuality isn't new. It dates far before the bible and Christianity has corrupted that. There are religions that don't care about this. Do some research,  If there is an all powerful being, it's unlikely that it cares about who you love or who you're having sex with.

Nov 11, 4:46PM EST0

What does the pink triangle mean?

Nov 8, 11:18AM EST0

It's been reclaimed from Nazi Germany (it was a badge to indicate male prisoners that have been sent there because they were gay) and it represents gay pride. It's second to the rainbow pride flag.

Nov 11, 4:38PM EST0

Do you think gay marriage affects straight people in any way ( how/how not)?

Nov 8, 10:49AM EST0

Hopefully you don't mean inspiring people to "flip". But if someone is homophobic it might upset them and they create stress about it that they don't need to. But it doesn't actually hurt anyone.

No. If somene lets it affect them, it's their own issue. But there's no actual effect on anyone. It's a way for two people to show they love each other, everyone should have that, not just straight people.

Nov 11, 4:35PM EST0

Have you ever been the victim of a hate crime?

Nov 8, 10:00AM EST0

Nov 11, 4:26PM EST0

Have you ever been in love?

Nov 8, 3:34AM EST0

Yes, twice. Once was a four year relationship that ended when I started transitioning and the other a few years later that ended when I pushed them away.

Yes, it's complicated. I highly recommend it.

Nov 11, 4:24PM EST0

What is a misconception about gay people that you think other people should know the truth about?

Nov 8, 1:20AM EST0

I remember one time in a high school health class, a boy once told the class he couldn't be friends with a gay person because he's worried they'd want to do stuff to him. He put it that eloquently. There was a gay kid in the class who then offered up the totally fire response of "What if they didn't"?

I think a lot of people, especially around that age, get weirded out because they think gay males are sexual deviants or overly promiscuous. Nothing could be further from the truth. They have committed partners and spouses, and even if not, not every single guy is lusting after everybody.

Years later, another friend was telling me he still meets people all the time who assume that gays only hang out with other gays, or that there may be a token one in a group of female friends. Now, I know this one isn't even remotely true. I have countless gay and lesbian friends I love with all my heart. And I'm a straight male! Fancy that...

When I was in university, I took a psychology course that touched on this topic. Being gay isn't a binary decision, it's a spectrum where someone can be more one way than another, a sliding scale.

The Kinsey scale is what Alex is referring to, but there is a different one (The purple-red scale) that is more accurate (http://www.newstalk.com/The-PurpleRed-Scale-may-be-set-to-replace-The-Kinsey-Scale)

Nov 11, 4:10PM EST0

Have you done other crowdfunding campaigns before?

Nov 7, 8:41PM EST0

Yes. Several. Some more successful than others. Passion projects are always going to connect on different levels.

Yes, I touched on this earlier. A lot of factors play into whether or not it will be successful. But yes, I have.

Nov 11, 4:03PM EST0

Will someone be gay because her moms are gay (lesbian)?

Nov 7, 8:34PM EST0

Just like gay children can be born to straight parents, straight children can be raised by gay parents.

So, no. You're born gay, you won't be gay "because".

Alex & Rain:

Not nessesarily. There are a lot of factors. There are 9 different genetic markers that corrolate to homosexuality and they're only 70% accurate (http://beta.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-genetic-homosexuality-nature-nurture-20151007-story.html). There are twin brothers in the study and one is gay and the other is straight. So even with gentics, no.

Are you aware of the potential risks crowdfunding presents, if you believe there are any?

Nov 7, 4:58PM EST0

There are always risks with crowdfunding, the biggest being not being able to fullfill rewards. However, keeping the rewards easily fullfillable at first and then adding on as the fundraiser goes, usually helps to mitgate that.

Nov 11, 3:51PM EST0

Do you want to have a family someday?

Nov 7, 3:45PM EST0

Not a big one, maybe one or two kids.

Maybe one day, but not anytime soon. I'm more focused on my career.

Nov 11, 3:46PM EST0

How long were you in denial for?

Nov 7, 3:20PM EST0

I was in denile until I was 24. I was so deep in denile that I was on the verge of homophobic. Eventually I had to either accept I was trans or I was going to die, so I embraced it, and was able to embrace being biromantic as well. So, I was in denile for my whole life up until 24.

Nov 11, 3:45PM EST0

How difficult it is to raise funds through crowdfunding sites compared to traditional fundraisers?

Nov 7, 1:37PM EST0

Michael: It's still a relatively new concept, so it may require a further sell and an explanation, for some. But as it gets more popular, it also gets wildly competitive. You can't donate to EVERY campaign or like EVERY Facebook page, I get it, that's why we just have to try our darnedest to be special.

Rain: It's difficult. I've done a few of these before which weren't all that successful. Having content that ressonates with a lot of people can make a big difference. In comparison to more traditional means though, there's less red tape.

Are you religious?

Nov 7, 1:30PM EST0

Alex: Yes, I grew up Orthodox and I have a quite a few beliefs that mediums share. Maybe semi-christian but there are a lot of conflicting beliefs. I believe in God and that God judges us. Rain: No. I'm spiritual and if I had to pick a religion I best identify with, it would be Buddism. I do believe in spirits and I believe in reincarnation, with spirits being a rest stop in between. But I do not believe in a god.
