I am a lettering artist making Enamel Pins! AMA!

I'm Marisa Darabi, the human behind inkyletters. I've been doing hand-lettering and blackwork illustration since 2012 and now I'm stumbling into the world of enamel pin-making via Kickstarter. I've started this project after having many people request pins or patches. I've already produced merch in line of prints and stickers, so I'm very excited and hopeful about this project coming to fruition. See the project HERE

How much research did you do in regard to crowdfunding before you settled on this particular site?

Sep 23, 4:33PM EDT0

Not much, to be honest. There's a lot of pin makers on Kickstarter so it seemed the reasonable choice.

Hey Joseph,

A link to my website and Instagram are in the body of the AMA. I don't have a twitter and my Facebook is a clone of my IG :)

Is crowdfunding just about money or are there other benefits?

Sep 23, 11:02AM EDT0

Hey Brent,

I think the reach Kickstarter has by having projects come up in search is really helpful in finding a new audience.

What do you feel the biggest benefits of Crowdfunding are?

Sep 23, 6:34AM EDT0

Bigger reach, all-or-nothing model leads to a degree of certainty and urgency.

I see you sell your work through Esty - how is Esty working for you? Any positive or negative comments you would like to give?

Sep 23, 4:50AM EDT0

Hey Amber,

Etsy's been pretty great. The clean storefront and people who otherwise wouldn't find you being able to do so through their search is fantastic. However, I'd say that most of my customers still come from my social media channels so I tend not to use Etsy's promotional tools unless it's the holidays or something.

If your campaign is successful, what future goals do you have for your product?

Sep 23, 1:21AM EDT0

If this campaign succeeds, many more pin campaigns will come after it and after a few, I'll perhaps have the steady pin-come (get it), to produce pins without pre-orders!

Do you do this full time or on the side as a hobby?

Sep 23, 12:21AM EDT0

I do this part-time freelance!

What have been the most challenging aspects of launching this campaign?

Sep 22, 11:58PM EDT0

Probably the uncertainty of whether or not it will be funded. Cancelled pledges are always a bit heartbreaking.

Can you give me 4 reasons as to why you choose crowdfunding to launch your product?

Sep 22, 10:15PM EDT0

Hey there,

1) There's a pin-making community on Kickstarter2) It's an endeavour that needs significant amount of money behind it to be produced3) An all-or-nothing approach is more reliable than pre-orders where I'd potentially have to issue refunds4) Kickstarter will allow me to come up in searches for 'pins', thus reaching a new audience aside from my regular followers

I've seen on your website you also design wedding cards, how much do you charge for 120?

Sep 22, 9:40PM EDT0

Hey Phillip!

That all depends on what information you'd be including on the card and what style you'd want. It can generally be anywhere from $1 - $4.50 a card!

What are your back-up plans if your campaign fails?

Sep 22, 5:46PM EDT0

Great question, Derek! I have two plans. One would be to relaunch the same campaign at a riper time. Perhaps when I have more followers on social media, or an even higher number requests for pins. The other plan I'm leaning more towards would be to relaunch the Kickstarter to only fund one pin. I am seeing so far one has been more popular than the others, so if I have a smaller goal for one as opposed to two, it'll be more likely to come to fruition. From there, people are more likely to fund more pins if they actually have my last one in their hands.

What important lesson have you learnt from using crowdfunding so far?

Sep 22, 5:24PM EDT0

It can be really fickle. I started off strong the first few days, then it dropped. Then it picked up again. Then a couple of people cancelled their pledges. SO you've gotta keep pushing it and get as many people as possible to know about it and share it with their circles!

Are your work inspired by tattoo style?

Sep 22, 4:55PM EDT1

Hey Ricardo,

Yes! I'm glad you caught that. I also design tattoos and am super inspired by blackwork especially.

What advice would you give to anyone else looking to create their first crowdfunding project?

Sep 22, 4:28PM EDT0

Hey Caroline,

I may not have the best advice since this is my first campaign, but I'd say to make sure you're making something people want, make sure you are advertising it on all your social media channels as well as any other channels of relevance. (eg. Facebook groups). Expose people to it frequently and try to emphasize the urgency of the time limit. And most importantly, just go for it! If it fails, you can try again with new parameters. If it succeeds, yay! So either way, you've learned something new.

What do you use for your art, pens, pencils, chalk or what?

Sep 22, 3:39PM EDT0

Hey Daniel,

I mainly use pencil and ink, but sometimes also use chalk for chalkboards and for digital art and design I use Photoshop and Illustrator.

What is Inkyletters and how did you start it? How is inkyletters related to this new enamel pin startup you've decided to do?

Sep 22, 12:26PM EDT0

Hey Brandon,

inkyletters is the name of my freelance design and lettering work. The enamel pins are related in that people requested existing designs as enamel pins, so I thought why the heck not! Plus, I love pins myself, so I'd love to start producing them.
